DIVORCE MADE IN KENYA!

It was another successful week of comedy from Heartstrings Kenya who put to stage the Kenyan way as far as Divorce is concerned.

Larry Asego really outdid himself this time with a good script plus the fresh talent from Heartstrings which made his work refreshing not to mention the wonderful directions from Victor Ber and Sammy Mwangi.

If you are tired of the same faces on stage or Teli, just go to Hearstrings' shows and the new talent will have you yearning for more.....

This show starts with the idea " You can probably tell where your relationship will end depending on where it started". The opening scene is a couple who first meet in a public toilet! yes a toilet and after the dude accidentally bumps into the lady, comedy unfolds as the lady goes gaga.

In an attempt to salvage the situation, the guy promises to buy the girl a new phone to make up for the one mangled in the bumpy incident. Aha! and here is fodder for a new scene where they plan to meet and exchange of new phone leads to a new relationship.

Larry delves into what makes the Kenyan Divorce experience unique- the drama, the in-laws, alcohol, and the evasive man syndrome.

Back on stage, guy takes lady out for soccer. Only that guy didn't tell lady that he is a die-hard fan of Kogalo a.k.a Gor Mahia. Apparently, Gor is no longer a football team; its a lifestyle. No! strike that out, its a responsibility and lady can't keep up with the responsibility of fanaticism. man! this was my best scene, it still cracks me up.

After a few lovey davvy dates, the couple decide to tie the knot inspite of their large differences and unresolved issues. A concoction that is a preamble for disaster.

In between scenes, Larry explores the seemingly double- standards prompted by religion and our cultures in an attempt to offer solutions to Marriage or trying to make Divorce palatable punctuated by the usual Larry Asego punchlines filled with humour and subtle innuendos.

Larry also takes a swipe at polygamy and the beer-logged men who have absconded their conjugal rights and the predicament their wives go through in society which shuns Divorced women. Mmmmmh the dilemma!
The closing scene deserves a grammy for stabbing at the dowry process. The hypocrisy exhibited by in-laws is put on display albeit hilariously. The relationship that started in the toilet ends there even before the wedding starts!

Its not hard to see why all theater lovers are always heading heartstrings way; First, the localised themes are genius and the fresh faces on stage just put the icing on the superbly baked cake. Its kudos to the Heartsrings team for another successful show.

HOPE HOPE & MORE HOPE!!

Today is WORLD AIDS DAY; a day to reflect and ponder on the strides made in the fight against AIDS.

Apparently, Infection rates have dropped in Kenya although still much remains to be done. At the end of the day, hope is all that pushes the fight forward and this story I came across on Daily Nation is the epitome of Hope.

Today is a time to re-energize the push to lower infection rates and more importantly take personal responsibility to go get tested while avoiding high risk behaviours.

Reflect, Reflect, Reflect.
